Arles

Once a Roman city, Arles still has a number of Roman features, the most visible of which is the ancient Roman arena right in the middle of the city. Arles is a good base to visit the Camargue and the old Roman viaduct, the Pont du Gard.

Relics of more recent times in the city, the Saint Trophime Cloisters (12th - 14th Century) are being restored and well worth a visit.

Vincent van Gogh spent a lot of time in Arles and ended his days in an asylum not far away. The bridge made famous by van Gogh in one of his paintings is not far out of the city and has been restored just as the painter would have seen it.
