Sacre-Coeur

One of the prettier churches of Paris, Sacre-Coeur stands at the top of the hill in Montmartre, high above the more seedier Boulevarde de Clichy.

You still need to wend your way through the money lenders and merchants that cluster around its base, but you can avoid the pilgrimage like climb up the steps by opting for the funicular railway that will deliver you almost to the door of salvation.

Then you can wander back down through the cafes and art shops that hug the sides of the narrow streets.
